welp, there were quite a few hurdles to do this but here we are! I present what may possibly be the first ever render of a model ripped straight from Pet Pals 2:

Pet Pals 2 bathroom render

it's a bathroom. that's it.

So, it looks like the model format was not as obscure as once thought - Chewy Software opted to use the Granny 3D engine by Epic Game Tools, formerly known as RAD Game Tools. The textures are already PNGs, so this wasn't too hard of a rip. I actually found this out while doing research on WayForward's LeapTV games, and quickly found out that the .GR2 format is off the shelf.

The real breakthrough was the fact that there happens to be a high-profile award winning game that opted to use the Granny engine for its 3D models. I'm not going to mention the name of said game, since the target audience of it diverts significantly from LeapFrog's target audience.

The tool I used to convert the Granny files into regular 'ol Collada files was lslib by Norbyte. I only used version 1.15.13 because of compatibilty issues, but newer versions should work fine. From there, you can import the model (plus rigging and animations if they exist) into Blender and apply the appropriate textures.

It was at this point that I learned that the Pet Pals aren't actually made of a single model per character. Instead, they are built from a shared parts collection.

Nice! I was wanting to rip some models from this too, but knew nothing on the model format. Should try this later! teh_supar_hackr (talk) 20:24, 26 November 2024 (UTC)
